Post-16 Options

What are my options post-16? There are a variety of options and pathways available which are listed below, this table also provides an overview: https://careerpilot.org.uk/qualifications

A-Levels – subject-based qualifications that can lead to university, further study, training, or work.
You can normally study three or more A-Levels over two years. They’re usually assessed by a series of examinations. Some colleges offer the opportunity to undertake A-Levels and a vocational equivalent as part of the three.
For further information: Understand what A-levels are & what you can do with them (ucas.com)

T-Levels – equivalent in size to 3 A-Levels, a T-Level focuses on vocational skills and can help pupils into skilled employment, higher study or apprenticeships.
Each T-Level includes an in-depth industry placement that lasts at least 45 days.
For further information: T Levels | The Next Level Qualification

Other vocational – related to a broad employment area and focussed on a specific subject they are often known by the awarding body name BTEC, NCFE, VTCT etc. Options to study at Level 1,2 or 3 depending on GCSE grades with Level 3 options being the equivalent of three A-Levels.
It is likely that there will be less of these in the future as more T-Levels become available.

Apprenticeships – work-based qualifications where you spend approximately four days with an employer and one day in an educational based setting per week. Post-16 you can study either a Level 2 or Level 3 apprenticeship with some leading on to Higher/Degree apprenticeships.
The application process is similar to applying to work and you do get paid/receive employment benefits.

How to find and apply for an apprenticeship

All young people are expected to stay in education or training for two years after Year 11. This could be at a sixth form, college or in an apprenticeship. You can also have a part time job or volunteer alongside.
As long as you are under 19 on the 1st of September further education is free, after which you would need to pay, so make the most of it!
