Weekly Message

This Tuesday, almost 200 sets of parents attended Year 8 Parents’ Evening. Thank you to everyone who made this a positive event.

Also on Tuesday, the Year 7/8s ran in the Gosport and Fareham Schools team at Basingstoke. Congratulations to Ben Gibbard (7S) who successfully qualified to represent Hampshire schools in the next round of the competition.

Next week, 15 Year 9 pupils are working with the English department on the BBC School Report, an exciting opportunity that gives young people in the UK the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience. The department will help pupils develop their journalistic skills to become School Reporters and will take part in the annual News Day run by the BBC. Good luck to everyone involved.

Finally, Year 9 pupils will be travelling to France on Friday 16 March for the annual Battlefields trip. Highlights of the two days will be a tour of Ypres area on Friday, looking at a section of the German trench system used in World War 1 and visiting the Passchendale Museum.

Year 10 Maths Feast Team Challenge

On Wednesday this week, Evan Goldstone, Adam Thomas, Harry Williams (pictured above) and Christopher Vickers represented Cams Hill School in the Further Maths competition called Maths Feast at Horndean Technology College. This competition involved some complex problem solving, with clear communication in their solutions, justifying how they arrived at their answers. There were 4 gruelling rounds including a practical challenge and a fascinating series of linked puzzles to solve in a grid similar to the “Blockbusters” game show! The boys put in a good performance, scoring well in each round. However, there was some strong opposition in the room, amongst the 15 teams competing and the winners were Bohunt School.
Well done to our team for their efforts on the day!

Mr C Fairhead, Maths Teacher

Top third finish for Cams Hill in UKMT Team Maths Challenge

Robyn Manners, Elise Kerens, Hussain Khedapa and Shayne Wood represented our school last week in the regional final of the UKMT Team Maths Challenge. There were 33 schools competing on Tuesday at Churcher’s College in Petersfield, all vying for a place in the final in London. Our pupils performed well in the first round scoring 51 out of 60 marks. They then battled the remaining three rounds in pairs, solving lots of mathematical puzzles and mental calculations. Tiffin School in Surrey came first, whilst we finished a very respectable 11th overall. Congratulations to our team for their hard work and effort on the day.
