Weekly Message – Issue 41

Credit Averages for this week:

Year 7                     7.81
Year 8                     8.79
Year 9                     7.52
Year 10                   5.12
Year 11                    3.51

We have concluded our first Week B of the year. Many pupils have now experienced lessons in all their subjects and the school routine is well underway. Year 10 and 11 pupils have settled well into their GCSE/Key Stage 4 courses and this term has seen the start of our new Key Stage 3 groupings across all subjects. The average class size is now 23 and pupils are in different groups for different subject area blocks. The feedback has been excellent and both pupils and teachers are seeing the benefits in the classroom.

As well as in lessons, many pupils have already participated in a number of the co-curricular activities we have on offer; many sporting fixtures have taken place including the Year 7 girls’ first competitive netball fixture and a win for the Year 9 football team in their first game of the season.

Assemblies this week have been delivered by Mrs Harrison-Jones (Headteacher) with the theme of ‘High expectations are the key to everything’, encouraging pupils to reflect on the goals they set themselves for the year ahead and that nothing is impossible. To read more about the assembly, please refer to the Headteacher’s Blog.

Open Evening – Thursday 19 September 2019

The school will open its doors on Thursday to prospective parents/carers and their children. This is always a fantastic evening with visitors experiencing the Cams Hill School Community coming together to celebrate and share all that is great about Cams Hill School. Further information about the evening can be found on our website.

Pupil Leadership

A group of Year 11 pupils visited Portsmouth College last week to take part in a pupil leadership training event. Taking part in a variety of workshops led by MPs and businesses, they learnt about being in a leadership role and the attributes needed to be a good leader.

The pupils shone and received such positive feedback from other visitors and the representatives at the college. We thank Portsmouth College for their invite and look forward to further opportunities.

ABC Anti-Bullying Ambassadors

Our pupil ambassadors visited Mayville School in Portsmouth on Thursday to take part in the ‘Diana Award’ anti-bullying training. This was a really worthwhile experience for all involved and our ambassadors have come back to school full of enthusiasm with some great ideas to roll out into the school community.

Other events coming up …

Headteacher Parent/Carer Clinics

The Headteacher has reintroduced her weekly Headteacher/parent/carer clinic which takes place every Wednesday from 1600 to 1800.

These clinics are an informal, bookable, 15-minute opportunity to chat with Mrs Harrison-Jones about the school, how your child is settling in, give some informal feedback and ask any informal questions you may have. They are not designed to raise a specific point or report a formal concern that requires immediate attention as there are formal channels through which parents/carers can raise issues that directly affect their child/children’s education at the school.

To give an example, previous topics of conversation have been about a child’s high achievement in activities out of school; a request for clarification around progression towards opening a sixth form; a discussion around the Headteachers vision for the school.

If you would like to book a 15-minute conversation with the Headteacher please do so via the PA, Mrs Michelle Dugan, on 01329 226548 giving a brief summary of what you would like to discuss.

Visit to Mayflower Theatre – Tuesday 17 September 2019

We have fifty Year 11 pupils heading to The Mayflower Theatre to see An Inspector Calls. Pupils are meeting in the Events Hall for 1800 for the coach to leave by 1815. Should pupils have any questions, they are to see Mrs Bateman or their English teacher.
