Weekly Message – Issue 35

Credit Averages For This Week

Year 7: 5        Year 8: 6        Year 9: 4        Year 10: 1.5

Thank you to all the Year 7 Parents and Carers able to join us at the Year 7 Parents’ Evening this week as the pupils conclude their first year here at Cams Hill School. That first year always seems to pass in a flash!

In a couple of weeks-time, we welcome our Year 7 September 2019 cohort as they spend time with us on their transition days. I am sure that our current Year 7 pupils will be readily at hand to support our ‘new’ pupils and show them the way.

This week also saw our second ‘Parent Forum’ this year with its focus on ‘Curriculum’. We had two sessions on Thursday, one in the morning and one in the early evening. We appreciate and value parents/carers giving their time to come in and discuss important school issues and make their contribution to school development. Watch this space for the next forum which will take place in the Autumn Term.

Continued Professional Learning of staff is also a significant aspect of school development. On Wednesday after school, all teaching staff headed to St Vincent Sixth Form College to take part in a TeachMeet organised by the Fareham and Gosport Collaboration Group. Hearing about and sharing best practice with colleagues from other local schools and colleges and listening to an inspirational key note speech by Sir John Jones, one of the most sought after educational speakers, teachers left with plenty to reflect on and implement with the pupils in their classrooms.

Sustainability and a community response to reducing plastic pollution are very much in focus here in school – please do read below to find out how the pupils can play their part for the benefit and future of our planet.

In other news…….

Gosport and Fareham Athletics Championships.

With the weather against us last week, the Year 7 pupils tempted the rain again on Tuesday at the Gosport and Fareham Athletics Championships.

The boys started with their field events, and the girls on the track, swapping over half-way through.

Many of our athletes finished in the top 3, and have been invited to represent the Gosport and Fareham district team on Tuesday 9 July 2019.

The pupils were outstanding in their attitude, competitive spirit and maturity throughout the afternoon.

  • The girls team placed 1st. An amazing performance, building on the strong performance of the girls track team in the Hampshire knockout competitions.
  • The boys team placed 2nd, behind Crofton School.

Highlights from the afternoon,

  • Boys 4x100m relay ran in an astounding 58 seconds placing 1st.
  • Girls 4x100m relay placed 1st.
  • Freddie Grinyer and Lewis Foster destroyed the field in their 200m races and 150m and Sophie Kent won the girls Long Jump with 3.60m.

‘Whisked Sponge’ Technical Challenge

Detailed planning and a keen eye for presentation were just some of the skills demonstrated by the Year 8 pupils who entered the Design and Technology ‘Whisked Sponge’ technical challenge.

The pupils challenge was to create an eye-catching signature dessert using the whisking method along with other culinary skills. Entries came in the form of a Marks and Spencer Advert style description, “Not just any whisked sponge but….” or a drawn annotated sketch – British Bake-Off style.

The entries were of high quality and the kitchen was ‘sizzling’ from the outset with the competitive atmosphere. Pupils were given an hour and thirty minutes to bake, decorate and present their dish under the watchful eye of the judges.

Although the judges faced very difficult decisions, they were unanimous in choosing the following pupils as the overall winners:

  • Leah Atkin – Flavour Burst Sponge
  • Sophie Bulpitt – Chocolate Honeycomb Dream

A big thank you and a well done to all involved!

Recycling at Cams Hill
Bottle Tops:

The results for the latest weigh-in for the house bottle top competition were:

  • 1st: Warrior
  • 2nd: Invincible
  • 3rd: Endeavour
  • 4th: Illustrious

Well done to Warrior! It has been great to see that boxes are already filling up again, so keep saving and bringing in those milk bottle tops!

More Recycling…Crisp Packets and Batteries:

Along with our plastic bottle recycling bins, the house-coloured crisp packet recycling boxes and battery collection boxes are now out and about around the school. The crisp packet boxes are located by the Dining Hall and the Battery collection tubs are in Reception. This recycling venture can also earn house points, so the gauntlet has been thrown down and now we can see which house is best at saving the planet!

FoodBank

Further to the weekly message last week, as we move forward to our final foodbank collection of the year, we have had our first donation from LUSH. They are donating lots of toiletries to help those in need and using our local foodbank. Please don’t forget to start looking out items to add to the foodbank, as the summertime can be difficult for families in need.
