Weekly Message
We are very proud of our broad and balanced curriculum at Cams Hill School. This week, pupils have had opportunities to take part in exciting challenges which stretched their abilities to apply knowledge and think creatively in a range of subject areas.
On Tuesday, over 80 pupils from Years 7 and 8, and 30 Year 5 pupils from Wicor, Castle and Harrison took part in a Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) challenge. They worked in small teams to generate solutions or ‘Big Ideas’ to tackle sustainability issues that are impacting our environment. Thank you to Mrs Gains in the Science department for organising.
On Wednesday 31 January, pupils studying GCSE Business took part in the ‘Tenner Challenge Masterclass.’ This was a fantastic event and the feedback from the organisers and pupils was overwhelmingly positive. Thank you to Mrs Lubbe for organising.
Next week, Year 9 pupils have a Guided Choices Evening on Thursday 8 February from 1800 to 2000. We hope to see as many pupils and parents as possible.
Finally, outdoor sporting fixtures finally started again after weeks of inclement weather. On Thursday, the Year 10 rugby won a thrilling match 38-33 against Toynbee in the Hampshire Bowl final. Congratulations to the boys and to Mr Worthy, Head of PE. The Under-14 girls’ football team lost narrowly to Mountbatten School and the Year 7 girls’ netball team finished the season with a good win against Henry Cort.

Year 10 Business GCSE – The Tenner Challenge
On Wednesday 31st January, the Year 10 Business GCSE pupils took part in the ‘Tenner Challenge Masterclass.’ The session used fun and interactive activities to challenge the pupils to think about entrepreneurship, employability and social impact.
Feedback from Masterclass Mentor, Victoria Leese, was extremely positive ‘It was a pleasure working with the pupils today. It’s lovely to see such an intelligent, polite and confident group of young people.’ Pupils also gave glowing feedback:
‘Over the course of the day we got to learn how to negotiate and how to handle and make profit so we are prepared for when we set up our own mini businesses. I am looking forward to the actual challenge, as using the money that we are given, we have to come up with a business idea that we will put into action and try to make a profit out of. We will have to give back the £10 and a £1 legacy and get to keep any money we make! This is a great opportunity for our business classes because we get to really see what making a business is like rather than doing little projects in class that we don’t really get to see in real life.’ Hallie-May Walter 10M

The Masterclass was a prelude for the main event which commences Monday 19th February. The Tenner Challenge is a National Competition for young people aged 11- 19 and helps young people develop key skills including creativity, positivity, resilience and problem solving, using real money to take calculated risks in business.
The pupils are pledged £10 from the Tenner Bank which they use as start-up capital to get their business off the ground. They have one month to set up a business – coming up with the idea of a product or service that they can sell and then journey the experience of what it is like to be a young entrepreneur and transform the original £10 into as much profit as they can.

Congratulations Catrin Gibbard (7C), Patrick Slee (7C), Haiden White (7H), Joshua Stanning (7M) and Charlie Trafford (7H). As part of Team AgileStorm, we were overall runners up in the First Lego League Tournament held at the University of Portsmouth and won the Project Presentation.
FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a global science and technology challenge for teams of ten students aged 9 to 16 years, to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for their future careers. The students work together to explore a given topic and make a presentation as well as design, build and program an autonomous LEGO robot to solve a series of missions.
This year our ten-person team called Agile Storm coached by Robot Liz-ii, was sponsored by Agile ICT and met on Saturday mornings from mid-September 2017 to prepare for the Tournament.
The University of Portsmouth is our regional Tournament venue and the winners compete against other teams in the final. From there the UK winners head for Tournaments across the world including USA, Estonia and Hungary.

“On the 1st of February 2018 the Cams Hill year 10 rugby team played Toynbee School in the final of The Hampshire Bowl. It was a fast-moving and competitive game of rugby with some great tackles and fantastic trys. In the first half of the game, Cams had a strong start scoring 38 to Toynbee’s 15. However, Toynbee fought back in the second half scoring a further 18 points, despite this Cams Hill’s defence held strong when under pressure winning Cams a well-deserved victory of 38 to 33. It was a great performance by the whole of the Cams Hill team, especially those who played for Cams for the first time. A big well done to all those who played, also I would like to thank Mr Worthy and those who helped organise the game, on behalf of the team.”

A polite reminder to Parents/Carers please ensure that all pupils property is clearly named with the pupils name and tutor group.
Various keys, watches and pairs of spectacles are kept in the Medical Room when handed into lost property. When named items are handed in to the Medical Room Form Tutors are notified by e-mail or printed slips, which are sent in school registers, to ask pupils to come and collect the items.
