Weekly Message
It has been a week of sporting success this week, with a range of basketball fixtures: the Year 8 girls beat Henry Cort; the Year 9 girls beat Bridgemary; the Year 9 boys beat Brune Park; the senior girls’ team beat Brune Park; and the Year 8 boys won against Brune Park. However, Brune Park gained some revenge against the Year 11 boys. A huge thank you to everyone who represents the school, win or lose, and of course to the dedicated PE team who give up so much time after school to ensure these fixtures take place.
On Wednesday, over 80 Year 10 pupils from Art, Graphics and Photography travelled to London. The Graphics and Photography pupils went to Trafalgar Square and visited an exhibition in the National Portrait Museum; the Art pupils went to the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Natural History Museum. Thank you to the Art Department for organising this trip and also to the Year 10 pupils, whose behaviour (according to Mrs Oswald-Cutler, Head of Art) was exemplary.
Looking ahead in your diaries, we have Year 11 Parents’ Evening (Tuesday 5 December 2017), and the School Christmas Concert (Wednesday 13 December 2017 and Thursday 14 December 2017). Further details of these events will be sent separately.

Year 10 Trip – London
On Wednesday 22 November Year 10 GCSE Art, Graphics and Photography pupils visited London. The Art pupils spent the morning at the Victoria and Albert Museum and after lunch ventured across the road to the Natural History Museum. These world renowned museums gave the students the opportunity to study real artworks and artefacts related to their GCSE topics.
In the V&A pupils focused on exploring the Lustrous Surfaces exhibits, part of the Asian collections, where fine examples of Japanese pottery juxtaposed incredible textiles. The pupils were particularly drawn to the amazing embroidery on the traditional Japanese kimonos; it was overwhelming to think about the amount of work it took to create just one kimono. The kimono is a Japanese traditional garment worn by men, women and children. In kimono it is the pattern on the surface, rather than the cut of the garment, that is significant. Indications of social status, personal identity and cultural sensitivity are expressed through colour and decoration.
In the Natural History Museum pupils had the chance to make first hand observational drawings from the animals on display, and record any other elements of inspiration in the building. The main entrance now has a blue whale skeleton which was very photogenic, especially as the light started to fade and the blue lights shining on the skeleton got brighter.
Meanwhile, across town the Photography and Graphics pupils spent their day snapping the capital city and visiting The National Portrait Gallery. The weather was fine, a little chilly at times, but otherwise perfect conditions for capturing the amazing sites which included Trafalgar Square and the attractions alongside the River Thames.
Whilst at the National Portrait Gallery pupils had the opportunity to visit The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize. The prize is the leading international photographic portrait competition, celebrating and promoting the very best in contemporary portrait photography. It has established a reputation for creativity and excellence, with works submitted by a range of photographers, from leading professionals to talented amateurs and the most exciting emerging artists.
The selected images, many of which will be on display for the first time, explore both traditional and contemporary approaches to the photographic portrait whilst capturing a range of characters, moods and locations. The exhibition of fifty-nine works features all of the prestigious prize winners including the winner of the £15,000 first prize.
Pupils will now be able to come back to their projects with fresh inspiration and images, guiding them with a greater depth of knowledge for their art works and photography.
The students were an absolute credit to Cams Hill School, impeccably behaved and a pleasure to spend the day with.
Mrs L Oswald-Cutler, Head of Art
