Weekly Message 224 – 3 May 2024
3rd May 2024
This week we reached another milestone as we celebrated with Year 11 their time at Cams Hill School with a ‘Leavers’ Assembly’. With their tutor group, tutors were able to reflect on the last five years and the journey that they have been on together.
There was laughter and there were tears and unexpected emotions as a chapter draws to a close. There is so much excitement too, with staff rooting for these wonderful young people to secure what they need, with what they have learned, to take their next steps beyond school.
Next week sees the start of the written GCSE examinations starting with Religious Studies on Thursday 9 May. Well done to all Year 11 pupils who completed their Creative Media Exam this week and to the Year 10 pupils who completed their GCSE Devised Performance Exam in Drama.
A polite reminder to parents and carers to consider local residents when picking up and dropping off their children at/near to school so as not to block roads or driveways and not to park in private bays. Thank you in anticipation of your support.
We also remind parents/carers that the school is closed on Monday 6 May 2024 as it is Bank Holiday.
Year 8 Parents’ Subject Evening
A reminder to Year 8 parents/carers that they can meet with their child’s subject teachers on Thursday 9 May 2024 at our online Parents’ Subject Evening. The letter with the specific details and booking arrangements was sent home on 30 April 2024.
HMS Temeraire Visit
Pupils completing the school’s Uniformed Services qualification visited HMS Temeraire on Wednesday, for a Royal Navy sports and careers day and a taster of what it is like to serve in the Royal Navy.
Pupils met serving members of both the Royal Marines and the Navy, undertook sports such as archery and shooting, and got hands on with some of the equipment the service is currently using.
The day finished with a display from the Royal Marines band and a prize giving for the pupils who worked hard throughout the day.
The pupils all enjoyed themselves, coming away inspired.

Attendance Spotlight – Holidays in Term Time
Children have 13 weeks’ annual holiday from school and school holiday dates are published in advance on the school website. Education law states that parents/carers do not have a right to take their child out of school for a holiday during term time. Families, therefore, are asked to plan and take their family holidays during the school holidays so that their child’s education is not disrupted. Only in exceptional circumstances may the Headteacher grant permission for leave; and it is the Headteacher’s decision on whether the absence is exceptional and how many days to approve.
The ‘Request for Pupil Absence’ form can be found here:

A parent/carer guide from the Department for Education can be found here. This outlines parent/carer responsibilities and advice on how schools and parents/carers can work together to improve attendance – Download (PDF)
The DfE has also produced ‘What I need to know about attendance’ guide – here
If you are concerned about your child’s attendance and/or punctuality, please get in touch with the school and speak to your child’s tutor, year team or the attendance team. We are here to support.
