It has been another busy and successful week at Cams Hill as you will see when you read on below. Well done to all GCSE Music pupils who completed their ‘performance’ recordings this week and GCSE Drama pupils who completed their Component 2 exam.
On Tuesday we held our first Citizenship Day of the year. The day focused the attention of pupils in all years on government and politics helping to provide pupils with knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a full and active part in society. There will be further citizenship focused activities during the year.
We remind parents and carers that the Year 11 Parents’ Subject Evening is on Tuesday 5 December 2023 and that this will be taking place face to face on site. A letter with the specific details about the evening including the appointment booking arrangements has been sent to parents/carers this week. We also remind parents and carers that car parking at the school is limited and we encourage people to walk where this is possible.
Sponge the Teacher for Children in Need
Our sponge the teacher event for Children in Need was postponed last week due to the weather. Pupils had a very enthusiastic time soaking teachers at break and after school on Wednesday this week instead. We are grateful to the teachers who volunteered to take part and for the many donations received. Thank you!
King of Children in Need
We wanted to share a big shout out to K Gjoni who has spearheaded the Children in Need fundraising efforts from Year 8. Over £1280 raised so far! #CamsAndProud
Year 9 Guest Speaker – Natural Hazards and Tectonic Activity in Iceland and Hawaii
David Edwards (https://www.guestspeaker.earth/) visited Year 9 on Thursday to give an informative talk about natural hazards and tectonic activity both in Iceland and Hawaii. They learned about why both countries have eruptions and the natural processes involved in forming the volcanoes.
Pupils watched footage of volcanic eruptions and the geysers in Iceland. The presentation was fabulous and very informative, not only for the Geography team but also for Year 9 as they begin their new topic on Natural Hazards.
Steve Willis Training Centre Visit
Steve Willis Training Centre visited Cams Hill on Tuesday to talk to a selection of Year 11 pupils about their apprenticeship provision, they gave them an insight into the gas/heating industry and how sought-after engineers are going to be in the next 10 years.
Pupils were able to try their hand at a variety of activities including a pipework exercise. If any Year 10 or 11 pupils are interested in a gas heating/electrical apprenticeship, they have a Taster Session taking place this Saturday at their Portchester Centre from 0900 to 1300. Year 11 Apprenticeships Fair
Today a group of Year 11 pupils visited Fareham’s Apprenticeships Fair. In attendance were BAE Systems, Google the Army, and Royal Navy along with local colleges and other training providers. The pupils who attended would like to gain an apprenticeship when they finish school. It was a brilliant opportunity to network and find out more about the variety of companies which offer apprenticeships and the progression routes they can take once they have completed the programme. Women’s Football at Southampton Stadium
On Thursday the PE department took 25 pupils to St Mary’s to watch Arsenal Women play against Southampton in the continental cup. For many it was their first live game and for others it was the first live ladies’ game they had watched.
We travelled on our two Cams Hill School minibuses which were full of very loud and excitable pupils. The game was surprisingly even despite the two teams being from entirely different leagues. Our pupils continued to be the loudest supporters and cheered and clapped for the full 90 minutes. It finished 2-1 to Arsenal and overall was a great game to watch and we look to plan many more.
EFL Girls’ Cup Tournament
A team of eight girls from Year 7 and 8 were taken to the EFL girls cup tournament, the girls faced teams out of our usual playing area from Chichester, Petersfield and Portsmouth.
We played some fantastic football despite it being a very different style to usual playing in a gated 7-a-side pitch, meaning less time on the ball, faster football and some very physical defending. The girls were an absolute credit to Cams Hill School and whether they won or lost, they shook hands and came off the pitch with smiles on their faces.
We ended up placing 3rd in our group, narrowly missing out on the semi-finals. Overall, it was a great morning of football, and we will be back next year for sure!
Christmas Concert 2023
The 1234 Maths House Challenge
The Maths Department would like tutor groups to have a go at trying to make as many totals as possible of the numbers from 1-100, using all the digits: 1, 2, 3 & 4 each time.
The first part is just finding the numbers 1-50. The closing date for this part of the challenge is Friday 8 December (week before Christmas break).
We will then launch the second part of the challenge (51-100) and this will form the last part of the challenge (closing dates for these will follow).
You can use the four operations, brackets, powers and roots in your solutions.
E.g. 5 = 4 + 2² – 3 x 1
Note: The rules of BIDMAS must be followed and additional numbers can be used in the form of powers and cube roots, etc.
Tutors have been sent a form for anyone within your tutor group to contribute a solution to. All entries must be handed to the maths department or placed in the entry box in the Maths office.
15+ correct solutions – 20 house points for your house
20+ correct solutions – 30 house points
25+ correct solutions – 40 house points
30 correct solutions (or the tutor group with the most) – 50 house points

Closing Dates for College Applications
Please see below the closing date for local college applications. We still recommend applying sooner rather than later even if a college does not have a deadline; this means pupils can secure a place and then focus on GCSEs. They can apply for more than one college and are allowed to accept places at more than one college if they are undecided. They do not need to make a final decision until after they have received their GCSE results in August 2024.
